Chile highlights

Santiago & the Wine Valleys

Chile's capital is a confident, cosmopolitan city with excellent food, a lively arts scene and easy access to the Andes. The Maipo and Casablanca valleys are within an hour's drive, making Santiago a natural base for combining city time with vineyard visits and mountain day trips.

The Atacama Desert

One of the driest places on earth and one of the most extraordinary. The Atacama offers geysers, salt flats, flamingo lagoons and some of the clearest night skies anywhere in the world. San Pedro de Atacama is the base for most visits, with a range of accommodation from simple guesthouses to small luxury lodges.

The Lake District

The Chilean Lake District — centred on Puerto Montt and the island of Chiloé — offers a gentler landscape of forested volcanoes, glacial lakes and wooden churches. A natural stopping point on a journey south towards Patagonia, and well suited to those who want to travel at a slower pace.

Chilean Patagonia

Torres del Paine National Park is the centrepiece — granite towers, glaciers, turquoise lakes and some of the most dramatic trekking in the world. Richard plans itineraries that balance time in the park with the right overnight stops, and can combine Chilean Patagonia with the Argentine side for those who want to cover more ground.
