Japan highlights
Tokyo
Tokyo is one of the world's great cities — a place of extraordinary contrasts, where quiet temple gardens sit alongside some of the most energetic neighbourhoods on earth. Shibuya, Shinjuku, Yanaka and Asakusa each have a distinct character, and the food across all of them is exceptional. Most Japan itineraries begin or end here.
Kyoto & the Kansai Region
Kyoto is the cultural heart of Japan — home to over a thousand temples, the Fushimi Inari shrine, the Arashiyama bamboo grove and the geisha district of Gion. Nara, Osaka and Hiroshima are all within easy reach, making the Kansai region the most rewarding part of Japan for a first visit.
The Japanese Alps & Rural Japan
The historic post towns of the Nakasendo trail, the thatched villages of Shirakawa-go and the mountain onsen of Hakone and Nikko offer a very different Japan from the cities. Richard plans itineraries that include time in rural areas for those who want to travel more slowly and spend time in places rather than passing through them.
Hokkaido & Northern Japan
Japan's northernmost main island has a distinct identity — wide open landscapes, exceptional seafood, world-class skiing at Niseko and Furano, and the Daisetsuzan national park. Hokkaido is well suited to those returning to Japan for a second or third visit, or to anyone whose interests are centred on food, nature or winter sports.
